Teen Singer on Verge of Stardom
Article by Paul Freeman, posted on May 4, 2007 at Palo Alto Daily News

Teen musical artists often emerge into the spotlight unprepared. San Jose's Chantelle Paige, on the brink of stardom, is definitely ready. The 19-year-old draws on not only talent and charisma, but also determination, a wealth of performing experience, a healthy perspective and solid family support.

After opening Pussycat Dolls shows, Paige returns home to appear at San Jose State Event Center tonight for the "Late Night Special Tour," with Pretty Ricky topping the bill.

Her six-song pop EP, "Like This," is available now. She is excitedly working on a full-length CD with producers who have guided such hit performers as Jennifer Lopez and Usher, and promises more R&B, hip-hop and dance flavors.

Academically advanced, Paige graduated early from high school and has lived on her own in Los Angeles for 18 months. She enjoys independence, but frequently returns to the Bay Area to visit family.

In addition to an older brother and half sister, she has a 14-year-old sister who models and sings. "She has an amazing voice," Paige said, "but she would much rather hang out with her friends. I have more of a work drive in me. I'm a major workaholic and I hate having nothing to do."

Paige began dance classes and modeling at age 3. Her success as a model resulted in the manufacture of Chantelle dolls. "It was crazy. I have a whole bunch of them at the house. They're kind of hideous-looking, actually," she laughed.

Paige enjoyed modeling. "My mom was there with me and she was my best friend. It made my relationship with my family even stronger. My mom and little sister were modeling too, so we were all in that world together."

A dance teacher chose her to sing the solo at a charity event and, sensing a genuine gift, suggested formal vocal training. At nine, Paige found voice mentor Raz Kennedy of Bobby McFerrin's Voicestra. "He's the reason I got extremely passionate about singing and decided that's what I wanted to do for my career."

She garnered attention at Children's Musical Theater San Jose. "They're one of the top theaters in the nation, a great training ground. I was lucky to grow up there with all those talented people," Paige said. Commercials, TV and movie work soon followed.

A home-schooled student until junior high, Paige didn't really like joining her peers at school. "Truthfully, my mom was a better teacher than most of the other teachers I've had. Also, I'm the type of person that does my own thing. But junior high is all about everyone being the same, wearing the same T-shirt," she said. "There's a lot of cliques.

"I grew up in dance and theater. There, you have much more diverse friends - jocks, people in band, Gothic people. You learn to accept every different type of person. In junior high, it so wasn't like that. People only hung out with certain people."

Paige drew inspiration from two of her idols. "I grew up on Madonna, because that was my mom's favorite. She's definitely one of my biggest influences."

Christina Aguilera was another. "I am in love with her gorgeous voice. In my book, she is, hands-down, the most talented singer. I went to see her when she was in L.A. She was running back and forth on stage, belting her little heart out. She's adorable."

Paige would welcome Aguilera-type celebrity. "Obviously, it's not the most fun thing to not be able to ever go out to the mall and not be bothered. But it comes with the territory and you have to realize that. If I'm lucky enough to get to that level of stardom, I'll know that the fans are what get you there. I never understood celebrities' being rude to fans. The fans make their careers."

When Paige achieves that lofty position, she plans to be a positive role model. "I don't drink or do drugs. I don't want my little sister doing that. I know that a lot of the people she looks up to in the music world do do that. I want to be one of the few who doesn't. Even when I'm 21 and it's legal, I'm not the type that's going to go out and get drunk. I never understood why people think they have to get drunk to have fun."

Paige maintains a strong sense of values. "I was brought up morally. I know if my mom ever caught me doing drugs, she'd slap me back to reality," Paige laughed.

Her mother encouraged Paige to set up an extra MySpace page promoting worthy causes: myspace.com/inspirationpaige. "We thought we'd use all the friends I have on MySpace for a good reason and show them all the charities they can get involved with."

Paige has been involved with Big Brothers and Big Sisters for a long time. "Statistics show (that) kids in (the Big Brothers, Big Sisters) program have changed for the better. Their test scores improved. They're happier people, because someone hung out with them and showed them that they cared."

Paige's positive approach extends to song writing. "It's important to have a few songs on my album that have meaning and either change someone for the better, change their opinion on something or challenge them."

Her album should launch her to a new stratosphere. "I'm living, breathing and sleeping my career right now. As for a boyfriend, my mom says, 'You're not allowed to have one. A boyfriend is a 20-hour-a-week job and you don't have time for that,'" Paige laughed.

"But I make time for my friends, even if it's just for a few minutes, to grab lunch or something. I stay sane."
