Chantelle Paige is a young, driven, talented and beautiful singer/songwriter out of the Bay Area with huge career aspirations. This charming 18 year old met up with Total Access Magazine in Downtown LA for a stunning Photoshoot with Photographer Gerry Garcia. She also opened up regarding her crazy MySpace fame, her acting and modeling resume and the typical comparisons to Britney and Christina that follow a young talented singer like herself

You currently reside in LA but where are you from originally? What made you decide to move to the City of Angels?

Chantelle Paige
I'm from the Bay Area, born and raised; I'm a little Cali girl! I've been coming to LA since I was 8 years old for acting, and after graduating early I moved here to start working with music producers. It can't get any better then writing and recording with angels.

At what age did you start singing and when did you realize you wanted to make it a career, not just a hobby?

Chantelle Paige
When I was 5 a dance teacher asked me to sing for a Christmas show at a hospital. I loved it! So for fun she made up a little song and dance number to “Million Dollar Baby” in which I tapped and sang. She took me to some competitions and I did really well, and that's when I decided I wanted to be a professional singer. So I guess I should take a moment to thank the dance teacher who made me realize my dream; thanks Alyson Meador. When I was around 11, I met Raz Kennedy at a conference in San Francisco. He's worked with AFI, Metallica, Counting Crows, Hilary Duff, ATeens, Aaron Carter and lots of others. Not long after we met he became my mentor and vocal coach. I took vocal lessons from him and quickly fell in love with his R&B style. When I was 14 he decided to put together a 3 girl group and I became a member. But three years later he decided to end the group and just do a demo for me. That demo attracted the interest of some other people in the business and It's all just kinda fell into place for me. I've been so blessed!

You probably get compared to a young Britney Spears or Christina Aguilera. Which star do you idolize more and why? Who are other influences?

Chantelle Paige
I love Christina Aguilera. She is one of my biggest influences! Besides having a killer voice that is undeniable, she is always herself....take it or leave it. I got the idea of journaling every night to come up with lyric ideas from her. Her songs are passionate, meaningful, and inspiring. As for Britney, she is one of the best female performers of my childhood. She danced her butt off on stage! I think it's sad that they've constantly been compared. The beauty of art is that everyone is unique. When I posted my first song on MySpace I got a lot of "you remind me of Britney & Christina,” but it was surprising that a lot of people also said Madonna. And I have to say that she was my first and greatest influence, so I was absolutely honored to hear that. I mean I even have a huge painting of Madonna hanging over my bed! I've also been influenced by Mariah Carey, Anastasia, Gwen (Stefani), Esthero, Beyonce and so many others, including The Black Eyed Peas.

You want to be an R&B singer and not a Pop Singer. What made you so set on that dream? How are you going to step out of the Pop Stereotype?

Chantelle Paige
Well, because of my mentor & vocal coach, Raz Kennedy I was already R&B. With “Tone” (he produced LIKE THIS which by the way you can purchase by going to http://www.chantellepaige.com we decided to make a more pop CD. Even though everyone loved it, I knew my heart was in R&B. So my manager and an A&R from a major label have set me up with some new producers and I have written about 15 new songs. They are R&B with a little bit of pop twist. I'm hoping that what will make me a little different as a young, female, R&B artist is that my songs aren't just about guys. I have one song about friends of mine (2 guys and their mom) who lost their 14 year old brother/son to a drunk hit and run driver. Another song is about a girl friend of mine who I encouraged to take it slower with her boyfriend, and earn his respect and love first. “Worth Something More” is on my “Like This” EP and was written for friends with different issues in their life like bulimia and cutting. I want to have lyrics with meaning that will touch someone’s life and change it for the better.

You have about 1.5 million views & plays on MySpace. How in the world did you get to that point and what does that mean to your career? What is your MySpace for those few who aren't your friend already?

www.myspace.com/ChantellePaige Add Me! (laughs). I have over 132,000 fans/friends and yes, it was unexpected and I was absolutely astonished!! I posted my first song on Dec 22nd, 2005 and a few of my MySpace friends with huge friend accounts sent out bulletins telling people to check out my new song. When I woke up the next morning I was #2 on the unsigned MySpace music chart, right under Tila Tequila and above Hollywood Undead. All my MySpace friends are amazing; they did bulletins telling their friends to check me out, put my link on their pages, and put me in their top 8, etc. It was very unexpected. And NO, I've never used bots or a promoting service to get friend adds. There was a time period when I was in the top 10 unsigned (with Cassie before she was signed) and getting up to 2000 add requests per day. I'm consistently in the top 40 charts in the genres of R&B, Pop & Club. I think that I get views and adds because I take time to write everyone back. If it were at all possible, I'd truly love to know each and every person that adds me. And I think THAT is how I got so many views and friends.

Who are some producers that you have worked with since you moved out to LA and what can we expect out of your future projects?

Chantelle Paige
I co-write with all my producers, and I am so overwhelmed with the amount of talent I'm surrounded with. Raz Kennedy was my first producer, my R&B backbone. Tone produced the 6 songs on my EP. Dem Jointz is an amazing R&B producer who's blowing up and you can check him out in my top friends on MySpace. Alias is so good as well, he's worked with Natasha Bedingfield, the Pussycat Dolls, and did some songs on the Step Up movie. Kirv, David Kopatz, Poet, Eddie, Shawn, Stereotypes, Victorious, Hit.... Like I said they are all beyond incredible, and I'm honored to be working with each and every one of them!

You are only 18 years old. Do you sometimes wish you could just be a normal kid and hang out at the mall or live in a college dorm with people your age?

Chantelle Paige
NOT ONE BIT!! I love working! I'm constantly writing, recording, dancing, journaling…doing something to further my career. And I am going to college. Even though I got into UC Berkeley and some other top schools I'm going to Cal State Northridge because I only have to go there part time. As for a dorm, if I had roommate they would kill me because I'm always singing, writing or dancing! (laughs) But trust me I'm still a kid, especially when I go out bowling with all my friends.

Also, you are an actress and a model. What projects have you been involved with in the past and what steps are you taking towards making it as a successful actress/model?

Chantelle Paige
I started modeling at the age of 3 and got my first commercial at the age of 5. I've had some small parts in movies and on TV shows. My resume is on my website (http://www.chantellepaige.com/). I'm just a touch under 5'6" so I'm too short for the kind of work I'd LIKE to model for. I love acting and wish I had more time to go on auditions but music is my first love. I've had the lead in a couple of Indie films the past couple of years and have signed a letter of intent for one that just got funded so we'll see what happens with that! I also just filmed a Nissan/Ecko commercial last week.

What current music projects are you working on? When can we expect a Chantelle Paige album or mixtape?

Chantelle Paige
I'm really busy working on new songs and a showcase right now. Things just seem to happen if they're not forced so I'm not setting a date for my album to be done. When I have the best songs I think I can come up with I'll release an album. Until then keep an eye out for my single!
